My child is not in school and is using Google Classroom to access lesson materials from home.

How will students continue their learning?

If a student is not in school, in circumstances where it has been agreed that they will continue with their education from home for their period of absence, teachers will use their professional judgement as to which is the best way to ensure that students continue to receive a high quality of learning.

Staff will provide students with lesson materials which allow students to continue their learning.

Sometimes staff will consider it most effective to provide students with access to the live lessons taking place in school via the ‘Google Meet’ facility. This might mean that students who are absent access the whole of the lesson or at times it might involve listening to some opening explanations then working independently before re-joining the live lesson for feedback at the end of the lesson.

On other occasion staff might consider it more effective to post on Google Classroom lesson materials with clear notes for students explaining how to use them.

Some staff will indicate to students that all of their lessons will be live meets other staff may set live individual lessons as an assignment and students will then click on the meet.

Students can also access a live lesson by clicking on the @join’ icon below the ‘Meet’ camera icon when in the class.

If a whole year group is absent from school for any reason, as far as is possible, students will follow their normal in-school timetable and at start of each lesson go to the relevant classroom and participate in the lesson.

Students can also make use of the Oak Academy resources at Oak National Academy Online Classroom (thenational.academy)

GSuite for Education is used across the curriculum

Google Classroom is our platform for home learning and sharing resources.  You will also find a number of clubs are on Google Classroom.

We use G Suite for Education – a set of education productivity tools from Google including Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Classroom, and more used by tens of millions of students and teachers around the world. Students will use their G Suite accounts to complete assignments and receive feedback, communicate with their teachers and during the current period of remore learning they will be able to engage in lessons through Google Classroom.

We use a special version of the core GSuite Apps to provide a secure learning intranet for our students and staff.  Google require basic information to set up these accounts, your child’s year group and name.

Google Cloud does contain much of the electronic work that your child completes in school.

Our student accounts have a particular set of security settings to reflect the fact that the system is being used by a child – they have a much higher security setting than our staff for example.  We take advice on these settings from companies that advise us, including Google.

On leaving the school, we can transfer your child’s digital learning record to his/her own gmail account through the Google TakeOut system – the school does not then retain any data.  This can be a wonderful souvenir of learning. Google accounts will be deleted within a few weeks of a child leaving Poynton High School.
