We are proud of the fact that so many of our students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme through the school and that we are one of the largest centres for the Award in the North West.  In 2019-20, 166 students started the Award at school and benefited from the opportunities that it brings.  This nationally recognised Award provides students with the chance to do things that they would not have thought possible in the past.  It develops a ‘can do’ culture among our students which is so valuable in the modern world. 

In Year 9, students begin the Bronze Award and the Silver Award can be started in Year 10.  In the Sixth Form, students will have the option of taking part in the Gold Award in Year 12.  No previous experience is necessary as all training will be provided. The Award is split into the following sections:

Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community. (NB: Volunteering must not be done for a business but can be undertaken for a charity or not-for-profit organisation.) 

Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.

Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.

Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.

Residential: staying and working away from home doing a shared activity. (Gold Award only)

Upon completion of the Gold Award, students are invited to London to receive their Award, from HRH The Earl of Wessex.
