The Geography department at Poynton High School aims to provide students with a knowledge-rich curriculum that is underpinned by fundamental skills and concepts. The key concepts and skills are drawn from the A Level and GCSE specifications and are mapped across the KS3 curriculum. 9. As a department we strive to challenge our students to become ambitious, responsible and curious learners. All members of the department contribute to designing and delivering an engaging and relevant experience for students. Staff in the department have a range of specialist knowledge and continually seek to improve their pedagogical craft. Geography is a popular course at both GCSE and A Level, with many students choosing to further their Geographical studies at university. Through high quality teaching and learning our intent is that the Geography curriculum will allow students to:

• access an ambitious, knowledge-rich, concept-led curriculum
• appreciate what it means to be a geographer by asking geographical questions such as ‘why is this place like this?’, ‘how is this place changing?’ and ‘how are other places affected?’
• understand how human and physical processes interact to influence and change landscapes, environments and the climate, as well as how human activity relies on the effective functioning of natural systems
• acquire powerful knowledge that allows them to develop a sense of social and environmental agency
• apply their geographical skills and understanding to interpret ‘real life’ geography
• appreciate the diversity of cultures that exist across continents and the nature of the world’s people, their communities, economies, diversities and experiences
• develop the ability to gather, analyse, present and interpret spatial information
• develop the specific skills needed to represent and interpret geographical data
• experience fieldwork that draws together their locational knowledge and that of human and physical processes
